Dennis Lee Tanking

Dennis Tanking, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and soon-to-be great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at his home in Darien at the age of 82 on Sunday, July 7, 2024.

Born in Elkhorn on November 3, 1941, to Henry and Violet Tanking, Dennis led a life rich in service, love, and dedication. A graduate of Badger High School in Lake Geneva, he went on to serve his country with honor in the US Air Force for four years. In 1989, Dennis found the love of his life, Kathleen McCarthy, and they had a beautiful marriage that lasted 35 years. Their life together was marked by spontaneous road trips, cherished family moments, and a shared passion for watching the Brewers.

Dennis loved the Lord. As a devoted member of the Williams Bay Lutheran Church, he served on the church council and his faith was evident in his every action. If you found yourself sharing a meal with him you would hear him say a heartfelt, “Thank you, Jesus!”

A man of many talents, Dennis was known for his handiness, capable of fixing almost anything. His professional life encompassed roles such as a draftsman in the Chicagoland area, estate management at the Elgin Club alongside his father, carpentry with his brother, and maintenance work at the Williams Bay School District.

Dennis is survived by his loving wife Kathy, his son David Tanking (Aimee), his daughter Tina Eaton (Tom), his stepson Buddy Breen (Laura), his sisters Janine Payne (David) and Gaye Gibbs, his brother Brian Tanking (Jeanne), grandchildren Morgan Tanking, Mackenzie Tanking, Gabe Breen, Andrew Breen (Amanda), and Luke Breen (Amelia), as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Henry and Violet Tanking, his sister Deborah Speckman, stepdaughter Erin Breen, and brother-in-law Jack Gibbs.

A funeral service celebrating his life will be held at Williams Bay Lutheran Church (11 Collie St, Williams Bay, WI 53191) on Sunday, July 14th at 2:00 PM. The family strongly suggests no flowers be sent. Donations to Williams Bay Lutheran Church are greatly appreciated.

His legacy of love, faith, and craftsmanship will forever be remembered by all who knew him.
