DELAVAN – Elizabeth “Betty” J. Schalmo, age 96, formerly of Delavan, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 28, 2026, at Oakwood Village in Madison, Wisconsin.
Betty was born in Delavan on December 16, 1929, to Clarence and Dorothy (Merrifield) Anderson. She was united in marriage to Edwin Schalmo on June 18, 1949. They shared 52 years of marriage until his passing on July 21, 2001.
Betty was a longtime member of Delavan United Church of Christ, Delavan Service League, and Delavan Monday Club. A talented watercolor artist, she spent many hours studying and painting. She cherished her church community in Delavan and, after moving to Oakwood Village, made many dear friends, especially among her fellow fourth-floor residents at Settlers Ridge.
Betty is survived by her four daughters: Barbara (Bill) Check of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin; Linda (Dan) Foley of Cottage Grove, Wisconsin; Betsy (Mark) Kita of Indian Wells, California and Jennifer (Steve) Luebke of Middleton, Wisconsin.
She is also survived by her nine grandchildren: Elizabeth (Don) Hammon, Brian (Jolene) Check, James (Kelly) Foley, Mike (Jenny) Foley, Bill (Candie) Foley, Ashley (Raf) Zielonka, Derek (Kristen) Kita, Anna Luebke, and Eric Luebke.
Her great-grandchildren include Zachary, Alexander, and Colton Lindbloom; Jasper and Weston Check; Theo, Owen, Juliette, Annabelle, and Brinley Foley; Zoey and Lively Zielonka; and Chloe and Matthew Kita.
Betty is also survived by her brother, Charles Anderson of Harlingen, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Dorothy Anderson; her husband, Edwin Schalmo; her sisters, Doris Styles and Mary Lou Sanders; and her brother, Dean Anderson.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 14, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Oakwood Village Prairie Ridge in Madison, Wisconsin, with lunch to follow.
