Delavan- Helen Zita Doering, 89, passed away peacefully on January 25, 2018 at Willowick Assisted Living in Clinton. Helen was born on October 11, 1928 in Milwaukee WI to the late Martin Moran and Zita Daley Moran. She had 4 siblings; Janet Remfrey, Margie Moran, Mary Jackson, and a surviving brother Joe Moran of Darien. She graduated from Delavan High School in 1946. After graduation, she worked at Archie McBride’s Waffle Shop, and in the offices at Borg’s in Delavan, and Adam’s Furniture in Janesville. During her lifetime, Helen lived in the Delavan area, Capron IL, and Janesville. She was a member of Christus Evangelical Lutheran Church, Darien American Legion Auxiliary, and the Friends of Carver-Roehl Park.
Helen married Allen (Mike) Doering on August 23, 1951 in the Priest’s home in Delavan, while Mike was on leave from the Navy. The couple had their wedding reception at Whitewater Lake Inn. Mike preceded her in death on September 27, 2000.
Mike and Helen had two children; Kurt Doering and Nancy (Kevin) Pope of Avalon. Their worlds were turned upside down on May 10, 1990 after Kurt was in a tragic car accident which resulted in his passing in 1991.
The couple worked side by side during all of their endeavors, which included owning two taverns both named “Mike and Helen’s” in Richmond and Allen’s Grove. They were an extremely outgoing and generous couple, who were always the first to help out and share all that they had with others. They were fun-loving, with St. Patrick’s Day always being a highlight at the taverns. No one knew how to throw a better, more elaborate party than Helen.
In the 1940s, Helen started going to the cottage on Blue Lake in Minocqua, WI. The cottage became the centerpiece of family gatherings. This special place provided family and friends unlimited enjoyment, and a lifetime of happy memories.
In her “spare” time Helen enjoyed raising animals, which included turkeys, ducks, chickens and pigs. She loved to cook, and was famous for her delicious rhubarb pies and coffee cakes. She loved gardening, and every summer she enjoyed growing, harvesting, eating and sharing the fruits of her labors with people for miles. She canned tomatoes and enjoyed them all year long. She spent time fishing, and up to the age of 86, she could be seen on her Cub Cadet mowing and maintaining her large lawn to a meticulous condition. She played cards on Mondays at Darien Senior Center. She had a special dog “Charlie”, and they enjoyed many special years together.
She is survived by her daughter, Nancy (Kevin) Pope of Avalon, grandchildren; Wade (Shalanna Gunderson) Pope of Shopiere, Shane (Becky Thomas) Pope of Avalon, Angie (Matt Paul) Pope of Delavan, Kristen (Brad) Zillmer of Sharon, Kim (Paul) Huff of Delavan, Kathleen (Todd) Nieuwenhuis of Japan, Kelly (Cyle) Ginner of Delavan, Kurt (GG) Doering of Wauwatosa, Keri Doering of Delavan and 12 great grandchildren.
Thank you to Beloit Regional Hospice. The family would also like to express their sincere heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to the outstanding staff at Willowick Assisted Living for the exceptional care and compassion shown to Helen and her family.
