Schmig, Eugene F. 'Gene'

Delavan - Eugene F. 'Gene' Schmig, age 78 of Delavan, passed away on March 18, 2010 at his home. He was born on September 1, 1931 in Clifton Township, Wisconsin, the son of Carl and Velma (Judevine) Schmig. Gene married Anita Manglos on August 6, 1966 in Rochester, New York ; she preceded him in death in 1999. After serving his country in the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1955, he went on to earn a degree in education. Gene eventually became a principal of all four elementary schools in the Delavan area at one time, then was principal at Wileman Elementary for many years until retirement. He was very involved with the United Way and served as past chairman, was a member of American Legion Post 95 of Delavan, and a past member of the Delavan Rotary. Gene was an outdoorsman, which included a love of hunting and fishing. As an avid sports fan, he enjoyed watching sports of all kinds. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his 2 children: Steven (Kelly) Schmig of Clinton and Stacy Kastein of Fond du Lac; 3 grandchildren: Jacob, Nathan, and Noah; 2 brothers: Keith (Norma) Schmig of West Salem and Verlyn (Kathy) Schmig of Door County and Arizona; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anita, 4 brothers, 1 sister, and his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM , Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at Monroe Funeral Home, Delavan, with Rev. Mike Ploeger officiating. Visitation will be on Tuesday, March 23, from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Burial will be at Valton Cemetery in Valton, WI with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family to be used towards a scholarship at Delavan-Darien High School. MONROE FUNERAL HOME, Delavan, is assisting the family.
