Eugene “Gene” Shreves

DELAVAN – Eugene N. Shreves of Delavan, WI, died on March 28, 2017, at his home. He was born January 8, 1928, in Sistersville, WV, the son of James A. and Flossie Rutter Shreves.

Gene graduated from Sistersville High School in 1946. He served for four years in the United States Air Force during the Korean War as an air traffic controller at the 755th AC&W Squadron in Williams Bay, WI. While at the radar base he worked part-time at Delbrook Golf Course in Delavan. On September 11, 1954, he married Barbara Davis at St. Andrew Catholic Church, Delavan.

He served as Pro Manager of Delbrook from 1955 through 1964 and began free junior golf lessons to share his love of the game with future generations. Gene was then Delbrook’s Pro Superintendent until his retirement in 1989. He was a 60-year member of The PGA of America and the Wisconsin PGA. His father was a greenskeeper and three of his brothers were golf professionals. Gene was also a member of The American Legion and St. Andrew. He volunteered for Meals on Wheels.

Gene is survived by his wife of 62 years, Barbara, Delavan; sons Geno (Jenean), Delavan, Paul (Cynthia), Bradenton, FL; daughters, Maribeth (Francis) Colberg, Burke, VA, Laurie Crader, Fairdealing, MO, Sara (David) Bode, Brookfield, WI; sisters Carolyn (Robert) Davis, Columbus, OH, Mary Rea, Sistersville, WV; brother Roy (Helen) Shreves; grandchildren Eddie and Adam Crader, Barbara and Steffen Colberg, Lindsey Shreves, Lesley Luna, Michael and Mitchell Shreves, Amanda and Aaron Sawtelle, Rebecca Bode; and eight great-grandchildren.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Arthur, Homer, Herbert, Raymond, Bernard; sisters Betty Louise, Ruth Billiter and Kathaleen Lough; son-in-law Dan Crader; and grandchildren Jeffrey Crader and Amy Jett.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, April 3, 2017 at St. Andrew Catholic Church, 714 East Walworth Avenue in Delavan. Visitation will be held from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. on Sunday, April 2, 2017 at Monroe Funeral Home, 604 East Walworth Avenue in Delavan.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Delavan-Darien School District Foundation – Gene Shreves Memorial Golf Scholarship or St. Andrew Catholic Church, Delavan, WI.
