It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James E. Garland Jr., 79, of Delavan, Wisconsin, on October 19, 2026.
James was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, the son of the late James E. Garland Sr. and Marianne Garland (Boyce).
James served proudly, honorably, and faithfully in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. Following his military service, he dedicated more than 25 years to the City of Chicago, serving as the General Foreman of Machinists and overseeing work on the mechanical bridges spanning over the entire Chicago River.
James was truly larger than life, had a wonderful sense of humor, and an infectious love for life. James had a passion for classic cars. He could often be found attending car shows, building and restoring muscle cars, or working on his latest automotive project. He cherished his dogs and had a special place in his heart for animals. Above all, James was someone who always made time for others, leaving behind countless memories, laughter, and stories that will be treasured by those who loved and knew him.
James is survived by his loving children and grandchildren; son James E. Garland III (wife Susan, children Alyssa and James IV), daughter Carrie A. Ferguson (husband Shaun, children Brendan, Matthew, and Timothy), and son Michael P. Garland (wife Katelynn, children Leighlynn and Michael Jr.)
James will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His humor, generosity, and zest for life will live on in the hearts of those he leaves behind.
